With the death of Peter Goodwin came the end of the era of the Journeyman Bookbinder which was the official name for those  who had served the  seven year apprenticeship under the supervision of a master craftsman. Peter plied his trade till the end of his life at 84.

 

This series of films shows how a master craftsman bound a book according to the rules of the craft. It is not so much of a how to do it but how a craftsman would bind a book professionally and that is why these Films are so precious today. There is nothing else quite like them.

 

Peter Goodwin 64 years of experience  to posterity. His death coincided with the end of the custom bound book but we can still enjoy his skill and wit and watch how he did bound them.

 

Many men enjoy watching a master craftsman at work and find it compelling viewing. The way Peter Goodwin handles paste and paper is a joy to behold. In fact one fan went so far as to say Goodwin was a 'National Treasure'!
